An Upper Northwest DC homeowner called Tim Whistler Plumbing about an aging boiler that was getting close to the end of its life and a gas water heater that was overdue for replacement. The owner wanted a straightforward, dependable setup: a traditional cast iron boiler and a standard gas water heater, not a high-end tankless system or a complex hybrid setup. The goal was reliable heat and hot water for years to come, with the work done to current code.
Modern code requirements for the existing exhaust piping meant the venting needed to be shortened, which forced a layout change. Both the boiler and the water heater would need to be relocated closer to the masonry chimney so the run from each unit to the chimney was short enough to meet current code. The home's original chimney also wasn't lined to current standards for the appliances being installed, so a new metal liner would need to be installed inside the existing masonry chimney to bring it up to code and ensure safe venting.
Our team coordinated the full project from start to finish. We sourced the homeowner's preferred cast iron boiler and gas water heater, then planned the relocation so both appliances would sit close enough to the chimney to meet the shortened venting requirements. The existing units were drained, disconnected, and removed. We ran new gas lines and water lines to the new locations, installed and connected both appliances, and lined the chimney with a properly sized metal liner. Every connection was pressure-tested and inspected before the system was put back into service.
This project is a good example of why working with a contractor licensed across plumbing, gas, and HVAC matters. Boiler replacement, gas line relocation, and chimney lining are three different skill sets, and pulling them under one license meant fewer surprises and faster turnaround for the homeowner.
The homeowner now has a reliable cast iron boiler for hydronic heat and a standard gas water heater for domestic hot water, both relocated and vented to current code through a properly lined chimney. The setup matches what they actually wanted: simple, durable equipment they understand, installed by licensed professionals across all three trades involved.
