A gas fireplace gives you the look of a wood fireplace without the chimney maintenance, wood storage, or air quality concerns. Tim Whistler Plumbing installs vented, vent-free, and direct-vent gas fireplaces in DMV homes, with the full gas line installation, venting, and permit handling done as part of the install.
Direct-vent: Sealed combustion chamber with a dedicated vent to the outside. Most efficient and cleanest option. Can be installed in homes without an existing chimney. The most common new install in the DMV.
Vented: Uses an existing chimney for venting. Often the right choice when converting an existing wood-burning fireplace.
Vent-free: No external venting required. Easiest install but produces some indoor air quality impact and is restricted or banned in some DMV jurisdictions.
We assess your installation location, recommend the right fireplace type for the space and your local code, plan the gas line and venting routing, pull the appropriate permits, install the fireplace and venting, run and connect the gas line, pressure test, and coordinate the inspection. The fireplace is lit, tested, and demonstrated before we leave.
Standard gas fireplace installations in the DMV typically run $3,000 to $8,000 installed, depending on the fireplace model, the venting requirements, and the complexity of the gas line work. Converting an existing wood fireplace to gas typically runs lower ($2,000 to $5,000) because the chimney is already in place. We provide written, itemized quotes.
Vent-free fireplaces are permitted in most DMV jurisdictions but with specific code requirements (room size minimums, CO detector requirements, BTU limits). DC has some additional restrictions. We confirm what is allowed at your specific address during the assessment.
Yes. We perform annual gas fireplace inspections including CO emission readings, gas pressure testing, safety sensor verification, and visual inspection of the venting and chimney. Annual inspection is recommended for safety and is sometimes required by warranty terms.
